The traditional start of the 23rd Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships is Tuesday, January 22nd at 11 a.m. with a gunshot start. The Snow Sculpture Championship is the signature winter event in Breckenridge and brings top snow sculpting talent from around the world for the week to compete for the glory of being the world’s best.
The idea is simple and is brought to life on a grand scale. 16 teams compete and using only hand tools they will carve beautiful and intricate sculptures into 20 ton blocks of snow that stand 12 feet high! The sculptures tower over spectators as they are transformed over the course of the week. The design of the sculptures is only constrained by the creativity of the participating teams and can be anything from geometrical shapes that defy gravity to heartwarming scenes to political statements. The best part is sculpting week where the blocks of snow are slowly transformed and the artists are accessible and enjoy conversing with spectators about their creations.
The Snow Sculpture Championship takes place in the River Walk Center Parking Lot and all around the River Walk Center. You really can’t miss it as the sculptures stand 12 feet tall and can be seen from many places around Breckenridge. In addition to the sculptures competing there will also be sponsor sculptures and a sculpture specifically for kids to play on. There is also the Ice Village that displays ice sculptures that are truly amazing. Be sure to check out the Event Headquarters that display the history of the event as well as sell merchandise related to the Snow Sculpture Championships.
The sculpting begins on Tuesday Jan 22nd and will continue until noon on Saturday the 26th. At that time the judging will commence and the awards ceremony will be Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Friday, January 24 is one of the best times to visit. Artists are preparing to stay up all night to do detail work and the atmosphere is celebratory.
If you can’t make it for Sculpting Week come for Viewing Week. During viewing week, the artists are done sculpting but the sculptures are here for your viewing pleasure. Weather permitting the snow sculptures will stay up until the night of Sunday, February 3, 2013.
