January in Breckenridge Means Winter Events

January is almost here and besides the best snow conditions of the year so far it is also the beginning of winter events season. January host two of Breckenridge’s premiere events. Held each January Ullr Fest and the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships bookend the month.

Ullr Fest starts Sunday, January 11th and runs for about a week. The festival celebrates Ullr, the Norse god of winter and skiing. Ullr Fest is a crazy mix of different and sometimes irreverent events including the annual ice skating party, Ullympics, Talent show and more.

The highlight and centerpiece event of Ullr Fest is the Ullr Parade which is on Thursday, January 15th at 4:30 p.m. on Main Street. It’s free and it is a great place to see Breckenridge’s wild side. The rest of January is dedicated to the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships.  The Snow Sculpture Championships draw thousands to see teams from all over the world compete for snow sculpture bragging rights.

 This international competition starts with 12 foot high, 20 ton blocks of highly compressed snow. The artists then use only hand tools to create intricate sculptures. The temporary works of art stay on display for a week after the event and finally removed. Although only around for a couple of weeks, these sculptures.

The Snow Sculpture Championships are spread over three weeks with the 2nd week being the most popular. The 1st week starts January 19thand is “Technical Week” and highlights how the blocks are made. The 2nd week is “Sculpting Week” from January 27th – 31st where the teams come in and create the art. The sculpture takes place from Tuesday to Saturday and the judging is on Saturday. The final week is “Viewing Week” where the sculptures remain up for people to enjoy. The sculptures are finally bulldozed on February 8th.

The Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships are coming to Breckenridge

The traditional start of the 23rd Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships is Tuesday, January 22nd at 11 a.m. with a gunshot start. The Snow Sculpture Championship is the signature winter event in Breckenridge and brings top snow sculpting talent from around the world for the week to compete for the glory of being the world’s best.

The idea is simple and is brought to life on a grand scale. 16 teams compete and using only hand tools they will carve beautiful and intricate sculptures into 20 ton blocks of snow that stand 12 feet high! The sculptures tower over spectators as they are transformed over the course of the week. The design of the sculptures is only constrained by the creativity of the participating teams and can be anything from geometrical shapes that defy gravity to heartwarming scenes to political statements. The best part is sculpting week where the blocks of snow are slowly transformed and the artists are accessible and enjoy conversing with spectators about their creations.

The Snow Sculpture Championship takes place in the River Walk Center Parking Lot and all around the River Walk Center. You really can’t miss it as the sculptures stand 12 feet tall and can be seen from many places around Breckenridge. In addition to the sculptures competing there will also be sponsor sculptures and a sculpture specifically for kids to play on. There is also the Ice Village that displays ice sculptures that are truly amazing. Be sure to check out the Event Headquarters that display the history of the event as well as sell merchandise related to the Snow Sculpture Championships.

The sculpting begins on Tuesday Jan 22nd and will continue until noon on Saturday the 26th. At that time the judging will commence and the awards ceremony will be Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Friday, January 24 is one of the best times to visit. Artists are preparing to stay up all night to do detail work and the atmosphere is celebratory.

If you can’t make it for Sculpting Week come for Viewing Week. During viewing week, the artists are done sculpting but the sculptures are here for your viewing pleasure. Weather permitting the snow sculptures will stay up until the night of Sunday, February 3, 2013.
